Welcome Back!!!!
First off, welcome back (and for some welcome to URI). We are thrilled that the 2010/2011 season has started and we can't wait to get going with our new group of sailors. The existing team is strong but we are hoping for a big freshmen class to continue the team's success long into the future.
All sailors interested in taking part in the team should join us for an informational meeting Thursday the 9th of September in the Senate Chambers on the 3rd floor of the Union at 8pm. This meeting will go over all the important information that you will need to get sailing, as well as answer all your questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you then.

URI's Season Comes to a Close
Believe it or not, the URI sailing team's season has come to an end for the 2009/2010 season. The spring season that started with a flurry of out of district events closed with several events very close to home; with championships at Conn College, Brown and Salve Regina. The Coast Guard Alumni Bowl saw the team finishing 14th out of the 18 New England teams in attendance. The Ram's didn't go down without a fight, after slow start the squad rotated players in hopes of finding someone with a feel for the conditions. This change in players continued as the team struggled to get on track. Inconsistency truly plagued the team who ended up using 5 skippers and 5 crews to make a push towards the 8th spot. In the end the combined divisions failed to score any sets with races inside the top ten.
Following the CGA Bowl there was no time to get down as the Women's Reid Trophy and Staake Team Race Trophy were the week following. The team was back at it with confidence that they had a shot at doing well at both events. At the Reid Trophy, the Lady Rams started out slow but made a charge to finish the regatta. Unfortunately 2 long wind delays slowed the pace of the event, both times delaying the comeback of the team. The late charge did put the team as close as 5 points from the final qualifying spot but their run would come up short as the final races were never sailed due to time running out. The disappointment of not qualifying was calmed a bit by the announcement that two of URI's best were recognized for NEISA's All New England Team. Amy Hawkins '12 made the All New England Skippers First Team and Missy Hudspeth '10 made the All New England Crews Team; certainly a well deserved honor for both who sailed tremendously well this entire year.
Down the bay at Roger Williams, the Staake team race squad was not phased by the wind delays and in fact benefited from delays to go undefeated in the second round. The team’s big push in round to propelled them into the final four in the lead, which they would never give up. The team of Mike Warren, Emma DeAguiar, Ben Quatromoni, Lisa Costich, Matt Carmody, Kelly Shea, Andrew Moakes and Jeremy Henry.
Following the Staake win, hopes were high that this group was best fit to race together and team racing was the Ram's great hope for a nationals bid. When seeding came out for New England’s it became obvious that the team's bid was not going to be easy. The team would open against Yale, Harvard, BC, UVM, and Dartmouth; no easy task for any team but this was going to make the difference for the this team to move on. The team did not give up and after two early losses in the fog, the team battled BC to the very end, just missing on a lack of an umpire call. The team would follow up with speed to beat Dartmouth before falling to UVM on a bad start. With only 1 win and 3 losses, the team still had a shot at the next round tying Dartmouth and UVM for the final place. In the end, UVM had URI's number beating the Ram's for a second time to advance, in turn ending the rhody team's season.
Overall, it was a solid season for the Rams as they continue to build their program to return as a national contender. That being said, the team is losing a great senior class loaded with talented sailors, tremendous team mates and good leadership. This group will be missed and we wish them the best as they enter into a new phase of their lives.

The Past Couple Weeks at URI
It has been some time since our last post. Over that time the URI sailing team has been practicing hard and posting good results. Weekend 9 (Easter Weekend) saw the team at 3 events. The Rhody squad went on to win the Southern Series hosted at URI. The combined division event was won out right by Liv Gunnarson and Lindsey LeClair. The pair posted an array of top 3 finishes to help lead the Rams past Dartmouth College. At the Ferarrone Team Race, URI battled its way to a 3rd place finish. After some close losses in round 1, the team went undefeated in round 2, climbing the leader board and making the final 4. The team did falter a bit in the final but were able to hold on to 3rd and a new understanding of improvements that must be made. Lastly, it was the women's team turn at the Dellenbaugh hosted by Brown. The event attracts most of the country's top female teams to do battle in 420s. This event was even more important for New England Teams as the NE Champs will be held there at the end of the month. For the Rams, the winds were challenging but the team was never out of contention for the country's best. In the end the team would climb to 7th and finish there. Bethany Leonard and Marisa Nixon finished strong in B division, helping the team secure the quality finish.
Weekend 10 was a practice weekend for the team, as they elected to spend the time training for the upcoming New England Champs. Saturday was spent on the outer pond with several guest sailors coming out to challenge the group. The practice featured 10 races in a very puffy westerly breeze and then finished with a series of 9 team races before a strong southerly sent the team in for the day. Sunday, the team headed to Conn College to practice with the Camels. This practice allowed the team to get a feel for the Conn FJs, new sails and strong current. The day was challenging with some extreme shifts and big lulls but in all it was a very productive day on the water.
This weekend, #11, is a big one as it feature the New England Dinghy Championship. This event will be a big test for the team as they must finish 8th or higher in order to qualify for National Semi Finals.
If you have a chance, some down to the Thames River and cheer on the Rhody Team as they fight to continue on to nationals.

Training Camp is a Success
The URI Team packed up and headed to Austin, Texas, for 5 days of rigorous training. The team setup camp at Austin Yacht Club, training on both the waters of Lake Travis as well as the surrounding grounds of AYC. The two disciplines of fleet and team racing were both huge focuses of trip, with every member making huge improvements on both fronts. At the conclusion of the trip the team was presented a burgee from an AYC official, while the entire URI squad gave praise to AYC for being such a great host. Overall, the trip was an incredible success and the team looks forward to get back to a full weekend of competition back in RI.

The Ram's finish 5th at the Wood Trophy while the Women's Team battle some of the nations best to finish 12th at Navy
Over the past weekend, URI had two teams on the water to at Salve and Navy competing. At Salve it was the team of Stephen Hansel, Andrew Moakes, Jamie Simmons and Jeremy Henry. The team battled the ever changing winds of the weekend storm to finish 5th place out of the 14 teams in attendance. This team which featured some of the teams biggest crews, was still game in the lighter conditions, a testament to the team work between skippers and crews.
At the Navy Women's event, URI was prepared at a variety of conditions. The strong winds to open Saturday saw crews Caroline Hall and Liv Gunnarsson on the water and working hard. After race 3, the wind had steadily dropped and in came Missy Hudspeth and Emily Anderson accompanying Amy Hawkins and Bethany Leonard. The team did face some struggles on the small, pin favored line. Sunday was a new day with new conditions and the team attacked the leader board, steadily climbing the leader board to as high as ninth. The rams did fall a bit following a course change into the river but still finished a respectable 12th place.
The Rams are taking the next two weekends off in order to train in Austin, Texas. Look for the Rhody Team upon their return during the first weekend in April.

URI Wins Thames River Team Race
The Rhode Island Squad consisting of skippers Mike Warren, Ben Quatromoni and Matt Carmody, as well as crews Carolyn Chaikin, Lisa Costich, Marisa Nixon, Emily Anderson, Caroline Hall and Kelly Shea put out a consistent effort on their way to winning the Thames River Race. The event hosted by Conn College featured 8 teams from around New England and was held last weekend in some very nice weather. While the URI group realizes that there is still a good bit of improvement to make, they will certainly take the top spot for the weekend. Congrats to the team on a solid performance.
